The Bazaruto Archipelago National Park protects East Africa's last viable dugong population, estimated at around 250 individuals — the only surviving group in the western Indian Ocean between the Red Sea and Madagascar. Boat-based watching only with luxury island lodge operators; encounters are rare but the conservation importance is immense.
