The Shark Bay World Heritage Area is home to over 10,000 dugongs — approximately 10 % of the world's entire population — supported by 4,000 km² of seagrass meadows, the largest in the world. Watched from wildlife cruise boats departing Monkey Mia, Denham or Dirk Hartog Island, or from scenic flights. Swimming with dugongs is not permitted. Most active September-May.
