On Costa Rica's remote Caribbean coast, Tortuguero National Park protects the Western Hemisphere's most important green sea turtle nesting beach, where tens of thousands of females haul ashore on 35 km of black sand between July and October. Guided night walks under strict red-light-only rules are the only way to witness the nesting ritual up close. The village and park are reachable only by boat or small plane, preserving one of the world's most atmospheric turtle encounters.
