Skomer, off the Pembrokeshire coast, is one of the best places in the world to watch Atlantic puffins, which nest in burrows right beside the footpaths and ignore visitors completely. A short boat crossing from Martin's Haven lands you on the island, where the birds bustle between the sea and their burrows a few steps away. The season runs from April to late July, peaking in June before the puffins head back out to sea.
