Taiaroa Head, at the tip of the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin, is the only mainland breeding colony of the northern royal albatross in the world, with a visitor centre built right beside the nests. From the observatory you watch the huge birds, with wingspans over three metres, soar in and land at the clifftop. The colony is active most of the year, with the summer months from November to February the busiest.
