Cruz del Condor, on the rim of Peru's Colca Canyon, is the world's most reliable place to see Andean condors, which ride the morning thermals out of the gorge at close range. Travellers gather at the viewpoint at dawn, a few hours from Arequipa, as the huge birds rise level with the rim on three-metre wingspans. The dry season from May to September gives the clearest mornings and the strongest thermals.
