The Salish Sea is home to two ecotypes: the critically endangered Southern Resident pods (J, K, L) that follow Pacific salmon runs and the fish-ignoring Bigg's/transient orcas that hunt seals and sea lions. Boat tours from Friday Harbor run mid-April to October; land-based watching is excellent at Lime Kiln Point State Park.
