The giant panda survives only in the mountain forests of central China, and every realistic encounter happens within a cluster of world-class research bases around Chengdu in Sichuan, since truly wild pandas hide in remote bamboo forests between 2,600 and 3,500 metres. The Chengdu Research Base is the most accessible with around 200 pandas including newborn cubs, while Dujiangyan focuses on rewilding, Wolong Shenshuping sits inside genuine wild habitat, and quiet Bifengxia spreads through a waterfall-cut gorge. Mornings between 8 and 10 am, when pandas feed before the day's warmth sends them to sleep, deliver the liveliest viewing in any season.
