Once a major whaling ground, the Azores have become a leading case study for sustainable whale watching since the mid-1980s. A resident population of sperm whales feeds along the deep trenches off Pico and São Miguel islands. Shore-based lookouts (vigias) spot the whales before boats approach. Some operators also run regulated in-water encounters.
