Home to around 1,800 lions, Kruger is Southern Africa's main lion stronghold. The adjacent private reserves of Sabi Sands and Timbavati (the latter famous for rare white lions) offer off-road vehicles and night drives, delivering some of the most reliable close-up lion encounters in Africa. Self-drive safaris are possible in Kruger itself.
