The island hosts its own endemic subspecies, the Kangaroo Island kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus fuliginosus) — a stocky, darker and more placid variant of the Western grey kangaroo. Sightings are near-guaranteed at Flinders Chase National Park, along roadside grasslands, and at dawn and dusk throughout the island. Often seen grazing alongside tammar wallabies and Cape Barren geese.
