Remote Katavi produces one of the greatest hippo spectacles on the planet: as the Katuma River dries, hundreds of hippos cram into a few shrinking pools, packed body to body in the mud. This is deep, rarely visited wilderness reached by light aircraft, rewarding the effort with scenes few travellers ever witness. The late dry season from August to October, especially October, is when the congregations reach their astonishing peak.
