Punta Tombo, in Argentine Patagonia, hosts the largest Magellanic penguin colony in the world, with up to 500,000 breeding pairs arriving each September to dig burrows and raise chicks until March. Boardwalks let visitors walk among penguins crossing the paths to and from the sea. The nearby Península Valdés adds another colony alongside sea lions, elephant seals and the famous orca beach-hunting spectacle. A 2-hour drive south of Puerto Madryn.
