The high-altitude deserts of southwest Bolivia, from the Salar de Uyuni salt flats to the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna Reserve, host healthy populations of wild vicuñas grazing at over 4,000 m. The typical 3-day 4x4 itinerary combines vicuña sightings with flamingo lagoons (Colorada and Verde), geysers, and the world's largest mirror surface on the salt flats. Domesticated llamas herded by Aymara shepherds are a constant sight around villages. The dry season (April-November) offers the clearest skies and most stable 4x4 tracks.
