Patagonia is the kingdom of the guanaco — the undomesticated cousin of the llama, which roams the pampas in herds of up to 500 strong. Torres del Paine National Park in Chile has seen numbers recover spectacularly to over 4,000 individuals, now a key prey species for the famous puma populations of the park. Argentine Patagonia offers vast viewing in Peninsula Valdés, Monte León and the steppes around El Calafate and El Chaltén. The southern summer (November-March) is the only realistic window; fierce winds are a constant.
