Known to the local Tlingit as 'Kootznoowoo' — Fortress of the Bears — Admiralty Island has the highest density of brown bears on Earth, estimated at around 1,600. Pack Creek Bear Viewing Area is the main visitor site, accessed by floatplane from Juneau. Small group sizes and strict permits preserve the experience.
