Periyar Tiger Reserve in Kerala offers silent bamboo-raft rides across a forested lake where elephants come to drink at the water's edge, often in family herds of 20+. The contiguous Nilgiri Biosphere — Nagarhole, Bandipur and Mudumalai parks across the Kerala-Karnataka-Tamil Nadu borders — delivers classic jeep safaris through teak and sandalwood forests with excellent tiger, leopard and gaur sightings alongside the elephants. Dry season (October-April) is best.
