Fauneya

⚠️ Endangered subspecies. The Borneo pygmy elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis) is a distinct subspecies with fewer than 1,500 individuals surviving, confined almost entirely to the Kinabatangan floodplain of Sabah. Smaller, rounder, and more placid than their mainland cousins, with large ears and babyish faces, they have been genetically isolated on Borneo for over 300,000 years. Small-boat river cruises from Sukau or Bilit lodges are the most reliable way to spot herds along the riverbanks — especially at dawn and dusk when they come to drink and bathe. Their habitat has been devastated by oil palm expansion, and sightings often happen in fragmented forest corridors between plantations. The experience combines with proboscis monkeys, orangutans, and hornbills — a full Borneo wildlife package. Dry season (March-October) is best.
