East Africa's largest montane rainforest protects around 500 chimpanzees alongside 12 other primate species, including a famous 400-strong 'supergroup' of black-and-white colobus monkeys. Chimp trekking here is more challenging than in Uganda — the animals are less habituated and the rainforest is steep and wet — but Nyungwe pairs beautifully with mountain gorilla trekking further north at Volcanoes National Park, making Rwanda the ultimate one-country primate itinerary.
