Around 75 % of the world's narwhal population migrates through the Canadian High Arctic each year, making this the only realistic place on Earth to see them. In May and June, pods follow the floe edge near Pond Inlet (Sirmilik National Park, Baffin Island) on their westward migration; by July and August they spread into the shallow summer feeding grounds of Admiralty Inlet, Prince Regent Inlet and Eclipse Sound, accessed from the Inuit communities of Pond Inlet and Arctic Bay. Ice-edge camps offer the most reliable land-based viewing, while expedition ships cover the open-water phase.
