Brazil's Projeto TAMAR, founded in 1980, runs the largest sea turtle conservation programme in the Americas. Five of the world's seven sea turtle species nest on Brazilian beaches, and Praia do Forte in Bahia is the flagship visitor centre, combining rehabilitation tanks, hatchling releases and guided night walks on nesting beaches (October-March). Hawksbill, loggerhead, green, olive ridley and leatherback all use the Brazilian coast, making it one of the most species-diverse nesting areas in the Atlantic.
