La Reunion is a real humpback breeding-season island in the southwest Indian Ocean, with whales present mainly from June to October and a usual peak in August. It is especially strong for coastal watching off Saint-Gilles and Saint-Pierre, and in-water encounters do exist under local rules, but they are tightly regulated and more debated than in flagship dedicated swim destinations.
