The mid-Atlantic archipelago is a global hotspot for cetaceans, with common, bottlenose, Atlantic spotted, striped and Risso's dolphins all encountered regularly. Shore-based lookouts spot pods before boats approach, minimising disturbance. Large pods of several hundred individuals are typical in summer.
