Malapascua is the only place on Earth where pelagic thresher sharks can be reliably observed at a cleaning station, rising each dawn from deep water to Monad Shoal and Kimud Shoal at 20 to 30 metres. These early-morning dives reward divers with close passes from sharks whose scythe-like tails measure half their body length, and encounter rates stay high in every month, with the calmest seas and sharpest reliability from March to May. Strict no-touch, no-flash protocols enforced by local dive operators have kept this fragile aggregation thriving for over two decades.
