Komodo National Park is the only place on Earth where wild Komodo dragons can be reliably observed, on ranger-guided treks across the savannah islands of Komodo and Rinca. Walking within metres of a three-metre monitor lizard that dominates its own ecosystem is a primal experience, best enjoyed in the dry months of April to June and September to November when trails are firm and dragons bask in the open. Access runs by boat from Labuan Bajo on Flores, and every walk requires a certified park ranger armed with the traditional forked staff.
