Every year up to 10 million straw-coloured fruit bats descend on a few hectares of swamp forest in Kasanka National Park, Zambia, forming the largest mammal migration on the planet. From late October to mid-December, and most intensely through November, dawn and dusk erupt as the sky fills edge to edge with bats streaming between roost and feeding grounds, watched from hides and tree platforms metres above the canopy. This remote, community-run park rewards the journey with a spectacle that wildlife film crews rank alongside the Serengeti crossings.
