The season runs mid July to October, with August and September the best. July and August bring heat runs and newborn calves, while September and October offer calmer mother and calf encounters.
Only four swimmers plus a guide are allowed in the water at once, a maximum of two boats per whale, and interactions are limited to about 1.5 hours. Swims run only with licensed operators.
A full day whale swim costs around 500 to 700 Tongan pa'anga (about 210 to 295 US dollars), and a half day 350 to 500 pa'anga (2026 prices).
Success rates are about 85 to 95 percent in peak season, though getting in the water always depends on conditions and the whales' behaviour.
