Merzouga, at the edge of the towering orange dunes of Erg Chebbi, is the most iconic Sahara camel experience. Berber-led camel caravans depart in late afternoon to reach a desert bivouac by sunset, with caravans silhouetted against the dune crests at golden hour — one of travel photography's most famous images. October to April is the only tolerable window; summer temperatures above 45 °C make the sand burn. The experience is purely cultural — Morocco's camels are fully domesticated working animals central to Berber and Tuareg heritage.
